Coots and grebe

Not often you are able to get some shots of the coots chase on water. Was lucky this time.

I really was wondering what they were thinking. First a very late point in time for nesting. Chicks should be hatched by now. And then, such a narrow nest on the water surface. The egg is probably in contact with the water. Last year a pair, maybe these two, built a similar nest as this. It was abandoned after a week. I hope this will be more lucky.

This weeks critters, birds and deers

Finally, the Dipper has arrived. This looks like a young one, the plumage is not that dark. I hope it stays and gets some company.  Last year we had three of them. They are fun to watch.

In Lake Näsnaren there used to be thousand of the cots. This year there are, maybe, 150. 😟
I also saw 3 of the   Smews in winter plumage, they too used to be hundreds (salskrake) 😟
Seems there were breeding issues for both species.

Fallow deer. It seems like it is the time for their rut. The herd was quite stirred. The huge buck was not there when I arrived. He came from behind me and run out in the field scaring the herd a bit and me too. He was clearly checking out some of the does. There was a few younger bucks too. But this was the main one. When he was done checking the does he came back in my direction. I thought he had seen me but luckily he did not. I was sitting in a cairn and quite safe. I did not really want any close contact with those antlers.
This buck is very dark in color so he might be the reason why so many of them tends to be darker every year.
It was a quite exciting day  😀

A lucky day

Fallow deer - Dovhjort
I was shooting a clover field when I turned around and spotted these, quite far away. I had to be really careful to get closer. I was happy because it was the first time this year I saw any in the beautiful summer hide.

Roe deer with two newborn - Rådjur m kid
Later on I spotted a roe deer on a field. First time I have seen that small ones.

The cots are now 2-3 weeks old and start to become juveniles. "teen ages" the redhead is disappearing. They now started to feed themselves a bit.

I was really lucky this day when it comes to wildlife. Deers I rarely see nowadays and roe deer newborn. Never happened before  :)

Finally the ice is almost gone. The birds starts to arrive, but so far, in small numbers. The deer finally comes out in the open. They have been very shy this winter.

First time I was able to capture coot chicks in the nest. The chicks in the nest seem to be newly hatched, they are still wet. Not fluffy as the swimming one. I don´t think they are cute, but I find them charming.

Birds this week

Cormorant nesting colony. Lots of chicks there.

Great cormorant, adult leaving the nest

A blackheaded gull skims the surface with both beak and feet, Looks like it is walking or dancing.

And some of the new inhabitants. Young Coot chicks.

I have known about the Cormorant colonies but have not investing it much as it is a bit tricky to get there. But now I really wanted to see the actual nesting. The trees are on a small island out in the lake. I needed my 400 lens and an adapter x2, makes it 800m lens to get this image. I had to fasten it on the birding tower fence to be able to take shots. Camera is heavy and it was windy.
The cormorant flying was shot with the 400 mm lens.

The gulls was skimming the watersurface to find food and sometimes even used the feet.

To finish off  the coots are hatching. This is for you Anni, I think I remember you loved them last year. These are maybe 2 or 3 days old. I have some new images not yet uploaded. Will try to post some next week.
