Lake Näsnaren today

Fall has started. It was raining on and off. The lake was dark due to rain and sun simultaneously. The first fall colors on leafs and Greylag goose gathering. A few ducks were also in the lake feeding before migrating south. There was also a faint rainbow but I couldn´t catch it.

Rainy and foggy days critters

Dipper, still. only one has come.  Upclose the fog is not visible.

Fallow deer
Bad sighting due to fog and a very muddy field. I did not go there thid day. Makes me wonder how it feels for them to sleep in that dirt?

 The first Bohemian waxwing turned up in a treetop  outside my balcony. I think the second one, among the branches, is a Great tit.

We still need rain for the groundwaterlevel to rise but going out is not fun. 😞

Birding at Vännervass

The boardwalk to get to the lake and birding platform on the small island is narrow. Walking through the reeds seem to take forever and then comes an old forest. 
This place is on the far side of the lake and difficult to reach. You certainly don´t want to get dizzy here. 

Mute swan - Knölsvan

There was a few ducks. I could recognice mallards and Eurasian wigeon. Three years ago there was thousands of tehm resting here on the way south. But two years of draught changed everything 😟

This is mostly greylag geese. Frightened by two sea eagles.

 "cormorant village"

White-tailed eagle - Havsörn

Here are the two eagles that stirred up the seabirds. They sit in the trees used by cormorants for nesting. The cormorants are already gone and the nests are empty. It is good that the cormorants are nesting in this remote area of the (still) lake. People don´t need to be disturbed by them.
I really hope it will come more rain to rise the water level or this will be a wetland instead of lake.

Yesterday evening I took the car and went out. Hopefully catching some sunset shots.
I got a lot more then I asked for :)   Some strange skies really. Loved it!

Birds this week

Cormorant nesting colony. Lots of chicks there.

A blackheaded gull skims the surface with both beak and feet, Looks like it is walking or dancing.

And some of the new inhabitants. Young Coot chicks.

I have known about the Cormorant colonies but have not investing it much as it is a bit tricky to get there. But now I really wanted to see the actual nesting. The trees are on a small island out in the lake. I needed my 400 lens and an adapter x2, makes it 800m lens to get this image. I had to fasten it on the birding tower fence to be able to take shots. Camera is heavy and it was windy.
The cormorant flying was shot with the 400 mm lens.


The gulls was skimming the watersurface to find food and sometimes even used the feet.

To finish off  the coots are hatching. This is for you Anni, I think I remember you loved them last year. These are maybe 2 or 3 days old. I have some new images not yet uploaded. Will try to post some next week.

I was at the forest feeder when the mist started to rise so I went to the lake and waited for the setting sun and rising mist 😊

Sometimes you are glad you have the umbrella in your backpack. Yesterday I really needed it. I also was glad I was close to the birding tower where there are a roof over the open verandah. Even if I got a bit wet I was not soaked.
