Two, four and six-legged Critters

Humble bees in cherry trees.
We have a roundabout traffic area where they planted 100 cherry trees  5 years ago. Lots of flowers but not many humble bees. Maybe they stayed at home where it is cosy and not cold. It actually came a little snow when I was there.
The top image I created for my cover image on FB.

Horned grebe! Top row"
I did not see them when I arrived at the ponds. But walking the area further away I saw one pair in  dense bushes. If they nest at that area it will be hard to watch them. There will soon grow a lot of reed and greeary on bushes, hiding them.

The Common crane, bottom row, seem to have a nest. They might be late. I have seen images with chicks on FB.

Moose and a common crane.
And this moose was rare. I have not seen any since Sept last year. This is probably a young male! No antlers yet, but the bright hind legs.

A great day! Not when it comes to numbers, but when it came to species.
I have a counter that counts my steps, I walked 7640 steps, outdoors, 5348 meters and used, only, 289 kcal. Weird, ain´t it? You walk for hours and use only 290 kcal. 😞

Critters in mosaics

Red deer, a deer I rarely see. Maybe twice a year, so I was thrilled seeing them. Both stags and hinds. The stag seem to be growing new antlers. There are the protecting velvet on them.
So, I don´t share any Fallow deers today. 😀

Sea eagle, one of the family flying in the area.
Western marsh harrier, there is one flying over the ponds!
Great crested grebe, I did see a pair in another lake.
And in yet onother lake, two pairs of Greylag goose already got hatchlings.

Coot fighting  © NF Photo 120325
This is something I don´t see anymore. Even 5 years ago there were a lot of coots in the ponds. And fighting going on a lot in breeding times. There used to be several hundreds of them and quite fun to watch. This year there are, maybe, five pairs. And so far appart they  don´t need to fight for territory or partners.

There also used to be a lot of gulls and mallards, but they too are absent.

The only positive thing is I spotted 4 pairs of horned grebe. So, I hope they stay. I can´t be sure until I see a nest.

I was about to share some images of the ponds 5 years ago and compare them with todays situation. Turned out I don´t have some old overview shots to show the population in those days. There used to be thousands of birds and many different species. Today the lakes/ponds are empty. It is soo sad to watch.

Take care everyone.
Oh, almost forgot, I got my first shot of vaccine. You probably know what I mean! 😃

Critter MM Hare crane swan duck

Sometimes I take the "long walk" to my grocery store. Like when it is to bad weather to go to the forest. This day I encountered these two hares in a park like area. The shop is on the other side of the tunnel visible in the shot. There often are one hare there so I was surprised to see two.

Northern shoveler
A pair of  Northern shoveler arrived in the ponds. I think it is the same pair as last year as they were swimming in the same area as earlier. A bit too far out for my taste. It is hard to get good shots in that distance. I was hoping to see young last year but did not notice any.

A pair of whooper swans also arrived at the pond. Can I wish for cygnets??

First time I was able to capture six Common cranes in one shot where I live. Usually I only see pairs. And in summer two chicks.

This is all for today. I have recieved my first Covid vaccine. If you want to see shots, visit the posts before this one.

Take care everyone, it is cold over here.

Critters this week

Butterflies are awakening now.
Peacock butterfly, The comma and the Mourning cloak.

Fallow deer!
This guy lost one of his antlers. The wound is visible on the inserted shot. First time I´ve seen this and got a shot. Now I will follow them more closely for a while. There are at least ten males and they will loose their antlers all of them. After that I will not recognize them as their antlers are like fingerprints. Unique to each one. In August I will be able to see new antlers grow out. Will be fun.
😀

I finally got a welcomming shot of the Grey wagtail. This is probably a female. The couple have been here for a while. I hope they will stay to nest and raise young!

This weeks nature mosaic

Top row, my lipstick flower and a wild flower, not sure wich.
Bottom row: The butterfly is an Orange underwing and the bird a White wagtail.
Both first sightings this year.

The forest ants got in touble when the forest was cut down due to being infected by
European spruce bark beetle. The forest workers obviously tried to save the ant hill. But it is nevertheless quite damaged. I have followed these ants for many years. I hope they survive, they are important to the forest.
