My forest is ruined

A sad day! I went to the forest I used to hike to see how much they had cut down as I knew they would! And it was A LOT. An estimation says it was about half of the forest was cut down. The forest was/is infected with European spruce bark beetle and needed to be cut, but that much????

Anyway I could see they saved what they could. Like this anthill. I have seen it for at least 12 years, since I moved to town. It is forest ants and they only live in a healthy forest. It is clear the cutters tried to save them. They cut the tree above the anthill but it is still damaged even if not destroyed. Time will tell if it survives.

This is a nearby birch they cut. The poor ants seemed to try to go to the top of the tree but there was no top. Or maybe they wanted to harvest the sap?

I met these hikers in a part not that much destroyed. YET!

I met them again a while later. They were not thrilled I can tell.

  1. It must have made you incredibly sad to witness destruction of the forest on this scale. We can only hope that the decision to do so is based on sound science and is necessary for its long term recovery.

  2. Hello,
It is sad to see the mess from the trees being cut, they destroy a lovely forest. The hiker has a beautiful horse and dog. I hope the ants are able to survive. Thank you for linking up and sharing your post. Take care, have a happy weekend! PS, I appreciate your visit and comments.

  4. Nei! Det så ikke pent ut. Tar jo mange år for et tre å vokse opp. I mellomtiden blir det vel masse tett krattskog? Ser det rundt her når noen har vært for ivrige med motorsagen.

  5. That always makes me sad too. I hope they are able to get the problem under control and that it will be worth it. They cut some of the forest I hike to plant native plants and trees. That seemed odd but I hope it works in the long run. Hugs!

  6. It's too bad, isn't it. That said, it will grow back. It's like COVID, they have to get rid of it.

  10. That's terrible! So sorry. We have the pine bark beetle here that causes tremendous damages. My dad the Forest Ranger said nature did not intend for large stands of the same species but here we are.

  12. What a disaster but hopefully for good purpose in the end. Haha … interesting hikers that come in three sizes. :)

  13. I know it looks awful, but sometimes, the old needs to go so the new can come in. Let's hope that is the case.

Thanks for joining us at 'My Corner of the World' this week!

  14. That is sad, i hope the forest can recover and that the cure wasn’t worse than the original problem. it at least is something that the workers *tried* to save the anthill. I’m not sure most doing that job would have even cared.

  15. Uh-oh.
I hope the presently healthy trees stay that way. And maybe new trees will be planted in this forest.
