Walpurgis Night - Valborgsmässoafton
Our spring celebration the last of April. For safety reasons my town celebrates the event at the local lake. With the fire on the water. Looks very nice but it does not warm you up when it is cold. And this evening was rather cold. The links tells a bit about the history but most people only means we celebrate spring! And this is the last day you are allowed to have open fires without permission. So people use this also to get rid of garden trash that will not go into compost.
The end of the celebration is a great firework.

  1. Takk for flotte bilder fra en tradisjon og feiring vi ikke har i Norge.

  4. I was wondering why they were lighting a fire out in the middle of the lake. Makes perfect sense now that I saw and read what you wrote about the event. What a wonderful celebration! We do that on July 4th here in the U.S.A. which is my favorite holiday. I love the lights! I love the food and conversation without the need of gifts to be exchanged. I think I would like to visit your land in April to see this sight. What a sight to behold!

  5. Very interesting -- learned about something new to me and "oohed and aahed" at your beautiful photos as much (or more) than I would have if I had actually been there. The second to the last one, with the golden reflection on the water is breathtaking.

I love the whole idea of this lovely celebration.

  15. Fascinating custom. I love that last photo—the smoke and lights make it look like a young galaxy.

  17. What a wonderful way to celebrate Spring...especially since you have such cold winters. I am feeling cold now...and it is 16 deg C! We are calling it a sudden "cold snap" - but we have been having warmer than usual weather for some time now. I enjoyed your pics...I will look up the festival info now.
